I make the decorative elements of the guitar, and for a commissioned guitar, this can be done in collaboration with the client.
Rosettes make a beautiful contribution to the aesthetics of the instrument, but they also serve the vital function if renforcing the thin spruce or cedar top around the sound hole, which would otherwise be prone to split. I make my own rosettes, as well as the binding and purfling from a mix of natural coloured and died veneers, some bought, and some home produced.
Lately I have made a few rosettes featuring the meander as the central motif. I am sure this will continue, but probably not exclusively.
Sometimes I use a back centre strip, but sometimes the natural features of the wood look better without.
